One of the most aggravating things to my wife and I is the media that surrounds us every day. We are expecting our first child, and the thought of our baby growing up in a world like we live in is a disturbing image. Movies and videos are streaming all over the internet with negative content that I would not want my children to watch.

I have seen many programs like ClearPlay, which filter the negative content from DVDs, but that does not solve the problem that we are facing. Most people are watching their entertainment through streaming online video and movies, my small family included. One of the greatest things I could imagine having is the ability to filter the garbage out of YouTube and streaming movies.

For years I have looked for a service that would satisfy our needs, but like they always say, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. ;)

How VidAngel Came To Be

My brothers and I have all felt the same way about this issue. We have continually felt the need to improve and fix this problem. In 2012, my brother Neal woke up in the middle of the night with the idea of how we could accomplish this. He and my two brothers, Jeffrey and Daniel, have marketed many companies and we all enjoyed the ideas of fixing this issue. We spoke with people that had previously been in the market of filtering movies, and they revealed that 48% of people prefer an airport version of a movie over a rated R or unrated version of a movie. With this in mind, we knew there was an idea to create.

One year latter, we have created the service of our dreams. It is wonderful thing to be a part of.

How VidAngel Works

VidAngel is designed to clean up all of YouTube and Google Play Movies. The idea is that in the future, we plan to work with Netflix, Amazon, and many other streaming video services. We decided to work with YouTube because it has a large community and tens of thousands of vloggers who are spitting out rated R material in 3 minute intervals.

There are two types of passes on VidAngel. There is the Community Pass which is completely free. That comes with the unlimited online YouTube video filters (these are not filters for full length movies). There is also a Premium Pass which comes with unlimited YouTube and movie filters. You can easily pick a movie on VidAngel.com, rent the movie, and customize your experience for your family. I have enjoyed the experience and will recommend this to anyone. I can tell it is a positive thing for my community.

We are also giving away a free Chromecast device with your first years subscription. Chromecast is like Apple TV but from Google. This allows you to stream videos from your smartphone and computer to your HDTV.

Android 2.1 - Update 1 for DROID, Not Until March...

According to sources from Verizon and Motorola, the Android 2.1 - Update 1 will not be available for the Motorola DROID until March sometime. There is still no official date on when this release will happen, but from the sounds of things there is no point checking your phone for an update every few hours until early March and maybe even later than that.

This is sad news for not just DROID owners but Android owners in general. We can be safe to assume that Android 2.1 will come to the DROID before other Android phones, and until that time, other Android phones can sit tight and wait it out.

Although this seems to be a tedious wait and many people are frustrated with the process that Google, Verizon, and Motorola seem to be taking for the OTA update, maybe Motorola will give us more features then we previously were expecting in the Android 2.1 - Update 1. Only time will tell, and for now, it would appear that this is exactly what we have between our DROIDs and Android 2.1, time.

Android 2.1 Rolls Out To Motorola DROID Users

Today Motorola's official fan page announced they would be rolling out the new Android 2.1 - Update 1 to Motorola DROID users this week. They didn't say how quickly this update would be released or when every user would receive the update, but it is encouraging news for the Motorola phones users on the Android OS.

There is no news on when the Motorola Cliq would be receiving the new Android 2.1 but Motorola has announced that they will also be receiving the update this year also.

For all Motorola DROID users, you can now again to say you are one up on all other smart phones and every other phone once again, you have the qwerty keyboard and the Nexus One/iPhone don't.

Facebook Dominating While Twitter Falls

If there were any signs to suggest that Facebook is building a monopoly over U.S. social networking, the latest statistics published by Hitwise surely paint a grim picture for Facebook’s competitors. Facebook increased its U.S. market share from 55.15 percent in August to 58.59 percent in September. Where did the majority of that share come from? Myspace, not surprisingly.

It’s also becoming clear that Facebook is expanding it’s demographic base to those that are over 55, up 108 percent in the past year. While MySpace has more time spent on the site than Facebook, Facebook will most likely surpass MySpace in overall time spent each month at some point over the next few months. Also somewhat surprising is the amount of traffic to social networking site, Tagged.com.

Tagged is known for blasting out large volumes of spam to users, which is why we’ve mostly dismissed the company for not having a sustainable future. While the company is profitable according to sources, we aren’t quite sure that sending out tons of email spam is an effective way for growing a company. Then again, they may be taking advice from Facebook who has used their contact import tool as their primary source of growth.

Also not completely surprising was more data suggesting that Twitter lost market share in September. While it’s difficult to measure Twitter activity simply based on traffic to the company’s website, one has to wonder how the company will make money if people stop visiting the site. For now Twitter has a lot of money in the bank and plenty of buzz that it’s unlikely the company will fade away.

It will be interesting to see how these trends continue over the coming months as Facebook races toward 400 million users.
